Spawning Runs

The Tweed Trout & Grayling Initiative plans to use traps to sample upstream Trout movement during their spawning runs. The traps (which only delay the Trout slightly) are placed within suitable spawning burns and provide valuable information about our Trout spawning runs and the balance between Brown Trout and Sea Trout. It is hoped that each of the Angling Associations involved in the Initiative will take on the responsibility of running a Trout trap in a spawning burn within their Association waters.

Traps, like the one shown on the right, block upstream movement and use water flows to direct the Trout into cage traps. The traps are only in operation during spawning runs and are checked daily. Trapped Trout are measured, sexed and have scales taken before being released unharmed upstream to continue their spawning run.

Information gained from Trout traps suggest that many of the Tweed Trout burns produce male Trout which stay in our rivers and females that go off to sea.
