The Challenge
This Challenge has been initiated by The Tweed Foundation to celebrate its 25th year of inception. It is a team angling competition in which anglers will represent their Trusts and is open to all Rivers and Fisheries Trusts in the UK.
The Rules of the Challenge are:
•Any Trust that is a member of the ART (The Association of Rivers Trusts) or RAFTS (The Rivers and Fisheries Trusts of Scotland) may enter the challenge •The Trust that holds the Trophy may keep it for no more that two years before issuing a new angling challenge for the Trophy to other Trusts. •The rules for each challenge may be set by the holding Trust but they must be equitable for potential challenging Trusts. •Each challenge must involve fishing and record keeping of fishing that is useful in fisheries management. •The holding Trust must keep the Trophy safely and must have a new challenge shield engraved with its name and date of winning upon it (an additional wooden base is supplied for use during the period when this is being done). •If , for any reason, a new challenge is not issued within two years the Trophy must be returned to The Tweed Foundation. •In the case of any dispute pertaining to the Trophy, the final arbiters shall be jointly the Chairmen of ART and RAFTS, or their representatives.
The Trophy
The Trophy was given to The Tweed Foundation by Mr. G. Nicholas to raise money for angling boats for the disabled in 2007. However the Foundation retained the Trophy, with the blessing of the donor and having received cash support for it from others, with the intention of creating this inter-Trusts challenge. The Trophy was originally called the BOCM Silcock Angling Trophy but has been out of commission for many years and has now been re-named.

The 2008 Tweed Challenge
In this Challenge there are no set angler numbers for entering teams which can consist of either single or multiple anglers. Only Trust Members of ART and RAFTS may enter the Challenge itself but all those attending the 2008 Tweed Foundation Workshop may fish on 6th June and there will be separate classes within the competition, for which they can compete:
• anglers using cane rods • the best individual angler • the largest Brown Trout or Grayling
The Water
Fishing is by kind permission of J. Rutherford Esq., Lord Biddulph and The Duke of Roxburghe who will present the prizes. The competition will comprise two sessions: an afternoon session and an evening session with 1˝ hours break in-between.
The afternoon session will run from 1400 - 1730 and will be on the lower reaches of the River Teviot. Anglers will be provided with a beat map and will be allowed to move freely within the competition stretch of water.
The evening session will run from 1900 - 2230 and will be held on the Middle Tweed. Anglers will be provided with a beat map and will be allowed to move freely within the competition stretch of water.
A meeting place and directions for the start and finish of the afternoon session and the start and finish of the evening session will be provided to all participants on the day of the competition, along with directions (the A699 lay-by next to the Junction Pool will be the start and finishing point for the afternoon session, whilst the Makerstoun fishing hut will be the start and finishing point for the evening session and the prize giving).

The 2008 Rules
The competition will be catch & release for Brown Trout & Grayling only; all fish should be measured and recorded to the fork of the tail to the nearest 0.5cm (using measuring tapes and recording sheets provided by the Tweed Foundation) before being returned unharmed; all fish should be recorded and only fish of 20cm and over count.
The scoring system will be 20 points received for each 20cm+ Brown Trout or Grayling caught and 1 point received for each cm of length (as is common in Scottish competition angling). The scores for each team are averages of the scores for all of their competing anglers. Place points are awarded for each session (e.g. winning team = 1 place point, 2nd = 2 place points, etc) and the results will be calculated at the end of the evening competition. The team with the lowest amount of place points will be declared the winner.
The competition is fly only; weighted flies are allowed. Hooks should be barb-less or de-barbed.
All anglers must cease fishing immediately on or before the predetermined finishing times for both the afternoon and evening sessions and make their way to the designated meeting points.
All anglers must abide by the Tweed Angling Codes. Anglers must carry written permission to fish (a permit) which will be included on the recording sheets that will be provided. Anglers should write their name on the sheet.
Catch Records
The Tweed Foundation Angling Challenge will be used to assist collection of Trout & Grayling catch data as part of the Foundation’s Tweed Trout & Grayling Initiative (TTGI). The Initiative uses catch records to monitor the strength of the Trout and Grayling stocks within the Tweed system; it currently receives catch diaries from around 80 anglers at the end of each fishing season and the results from five large scale annual Trout & Grayling fishing competitions (all fished as catch & release). This Challenge will help provide catch records from two different parts of the Tweed system, one of which is under recorded and the other very lightly fished. In addition, many of the anglers participating will be asked to take scale samples from Trout & Grayling caught to assist the TTGI’s scale collection project aimed at studying growth rates from different parts of the system and comparing modern growth rates with scale data collected previously by The Tweed Foundation. Follow this link to read about the TTGI.
